Learning about the role of the Police

31 October 2018

Two Victoria Police officers, recently visited Djerriwarrh at Sunshine and spoke to some of our SEE students.  The visit was to build positive and trusting relationships and to let the students know, not to be afraid to seek assistance from the police.

Many of our students come from various culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and do not fully understand the role of the police in Australia. The police and security forces may work differently in their birth country and language can be a barrier.

Our students can face a range of complex issues and challenges in our Australia, and they need to be confident seeking the help of the police if this is necessary.

The police officers who visited provided information about what the police do, safety tips and they explained how to call 000. They told students that they can request the use of interpreters if necessary.

While our students learned more about the police, the officers were also interested to improve the way they relate to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

We thank the constables for the ongoing commitment to support the community.
