From Rebuilding Confidence to Building a Career: Saleha’s SEE Program Journey
When Saleha Ahmadi arrived in Australia from Afghanistan in 2018, she was focused on creating a new life and supporting herself in a new country. She spent almost six years working in a meat processing factory in regional Queensland, gaining valuable work experience but having limited opportunities to practise and improve her English.
Over time, Saleha felt her English confidence had declined, making everyday communication and future career goals more challenging. Determined to improve her language skills and create new opportunities for herself, she joined the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in 2025.
Since starting the program, Saleha has worked hard to strengthen her English, build her confidence and develop the skills needed to succeed in the Australian workforce. Through the support of the SEE Program, she has improved her communication skills, workplace readiness and employability skills, helping her take important steps towards her future career goals.
As part of her preparation for workplace training, Saleha successfully completed the A7.2d Workplace Safety unit in May 2026, achieving 100% completion. This training provided her with a strong understanding of workplace safety, responsibilities and expectations within Australian workplaces.
In June 2026, Saleha put her learning into practice during a workplace training placement at Salvos Stores in Sunshine. The placement gave her the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a busy retail and community-focused environment.
During her time at Salvos Stores, Saleha worked alongside staff, observed daily operations and developed valuable skills in customer service, teamwork and workplace communication. She also gained experience following workplace procedures, building professional relationships and understanding the importance of reliability and respectful communication in the workplace.
The experience helped Saleha gain a deeper understanding of Australian workplace culture while boosting her confidence in her ability to work and communicate with others.
Saleha’s long-term goal is to become a dental assistant. While her placement was in a retail setting, the experience provided her with transferable skills that will support her future studies and career aspirations, including communication, professionalism, teamwork and customer service.
Reflecting on her placement, Saleha said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience and appreciated the opportunity to learn in a real workplace environment.
“The staff were friendly, kind and helpful. I learned new skills and enjoyed working with the team,” she said.
Saleha’s journey highlights the positive impact of the SEE Program in helping participants build their confidence, improve their English and gain practical workplace experience. Through her dedication and commitment, she has taken another important step towards achieving her career goals and creating a bright future in Australia.
