From English Learning to Full-Time Work
Lai Har Chin is now moving into full-time work after building her English language and digital skills through the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program.
Lai came to Australia from Malaysia 40 years ago but was too busy working to come to English classes until 2024 when she enrolled in SEE at Wyndham Community and Education Centre. Lai said in the past she had, “no chance to study – work, work, work – because I work too hard for the family.”
Before starting the program, Lai could understand some everyday English but often felt unsure about speaking and worried about making mistakes. This affected her confidence when communicating outside the classroom and limited her work options.
Through the SEE program, Lai steadily built her confidence and skills. Her teacher describes her as highly motivated, with a strong willingness to practise her English and take on new challenges. “I want to speak English easy to other people,” Lai said.
Learning English has helped Lai feel more confident using public transport, communicating at shops, and participating in her community — all important skills for employment as well as daily life.
A valuable part of Lai’s learning has been developing her digital skills. Using a computer was initially unfamiliar and intimidating, but with support from her teacher and classmates, she gained confidence using technology as part of her studies.
“Because I couldn’t do the computer on my own at the start, I used to wait for other people to help me. Now the other way round – other people ask me for help. I’m so proud of myself.”
With improved English, stronger digital skills and increased confidence, we wish Lai well as she moves on to full-time work.
