Eden builds confidence, independence and a new future
Continuing to learn English through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is helping Eden achieve her goals beyond the classroom. While attending AMEP classes at Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services each week, Eden is also studying a Certificate III in Individual Support, using the English language, communication and confidence she is building through the AMEP to support her success.
Eden’s journey highlights how AMEP can help students progress to further study and employment opportunities while continuing to develop their English skills. Rather than ending when she began vocational training, Eden’s English learning remains an important part of her pathway towards a career in the support services sector.
Before enrolling in her Certificate III, Eden explored career options through Career Compass: Pathway to Support Services, which was an AMEP Innovative Project. Here she identified her goal of becoming an Individual Support Worker.
She also participated in AMEP Drive which was another Innovative Project. She was able to get her Australian driver’s licence, giving her greater independence and confidence to support her family.
When Eden arrived in Australia from Eritrea with her family in October 2024, she was determined to build a safe and secure future. Just over a month later, she enrolled in AMEP classes through Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services. Since then, learning English has helped her make new friends, connect with her local community and become more independent in everyday life. A dedicated student, she continues to attend classes each week and has maintained an attendance rate of more than 85 per cent.
