AMEP Student Named Adult Learners Week Ambassador

23 July 2026

At 51, Chamila Baddesvitha is proving that it is never too late to learn, grow and pursue new opportunities. Originally from Sri Lanka, Chamila brought with her a Bachelor of Science and 27 years of experience as a mathematics teacher when she moved to Australia.

In mid-2025, she enrolled in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) at Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services. Funded by the Department of Home Affairs, AMEP helps eligible migrants build the English language skills they need to participate fully in Australian life.

Chamila’s commitment to learning quickly stood out, earning her the Anita Cutler Award for Most Improved Student in Djerriwarrh’s AMEP program.

Alongside her daytime English classes, Chamila has been studying to become an education support worker, attending classes two evenings a week. She recently completed a placement at St Albans Primary School and hopes to continue her career in education in Australia.

Now selected as an Adult Learners Week ambassador, Chamila is inspiring others through her determination and dedication to lifelong learning. Her story demonstrates how adult education can build confidence, open new opportunities and help people continue contributing their skills and experience to their communities.

Learning for Employment congratulates Chamila on being chosen as an Adult Learners Week ambassador and wishes her every success for the future.
