Sandra migrated from Italy to Australia two years ago with her family. Her hopes to find employment were reassured when she was referred to the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program in Melton. She commenced the program in April 2014 and has improved greatly in reading, writing and speaking English.
“I learn new words everyday and we improve our listening by watching a movie,”
In October 2014, Sandra was successful in her job application and secured a part-time role as a factory assistant in Laverton. She attributes her success to her SEE teacher who helped her with her resume as well as her classmates who did role plays in class to prepare her for the interview.
“I understand the production process at work and know how to restart the machine if it stops. I am also able to read and apply for reward cards at the shopping mall,”
The SEE program’s flexible hours fits into her part-time job. She aspires to continue improving her language skills in search of employment opportunities in accountancy or book-keeping roles. Sandra exudes confidence and is now more fluent in speaking the English language. She added that she now feels like she belongs in her community and has a higher level of self-esteem when conversing in English.
