More than just English – AFL multicultural round

On Sunday 30 July an excited group of students and staff from Djerriwarrh met at Etihad Stadium. We were there as guests of the Western Bulldogs to watch the Doggies play Essendon and celebrate the AFL’s multicultural round.

A volunteer from the Western Bulldogs met our group at the ground and we were very pleased to be sitting close to the Bulldogs cheer squad. Three of our students dressed in their national dress and were a part of the on ground guard of honour for the players. Although many of the students had not ever been to an AFL game before, they got into the spirit of the day, cheering and barracking for the Bulldogs.

It was a close game, with neither side looking a clear winner until the end. Luckily the Doggies finished strongly and brought home a win for their newest supporters!

We were delighted to accept the Western Bulldogs’ generous hospitality and the students who attended were keen to tell their classmates about their day on Monday morning. Now many of the other students are interested in going to see this uniquely Aussie event.
