Excursion to Koorie Heritage Trust

One of our SEE classes recently visited the Koorie Heritage Trust at Federation Square. The students travelled to Federation Square from Sunshine by train.

They were taken on a tour by Koorie Heritage Trust staff member Steven.  The students learned about bush foods, the history of Melbourne and about indigenous life before and after European settlement.

I asked our teacher Ama about the day:

The whole idea came out of discussions we had about Australia Day. I could tell the students were very interested and engaged because they retained so much information. Some of them had experiences of being marginalised in their own country before coming to Australia, so the Koorie experience resonated with them.

Once they were back in class the students made booklets about their day.
